Dalian (simplified Chinese: 大连; traditional Chinese: 大連; pinyin: Dàlián; Japanese: Dairen; Russian: Далянь, Dalian or Дальний, Dalny) is a major sub-provincial seaport city in Liaoning Province of Northeast China.
Originally a Russian then Japanese colony, the city is a major shipping hub and software outsource center. With the contruction of Intel's 2 billion dollar cpu plant, English speakers (specifically Americans) will help the city's continued transformation into a fully international location. While the Dalian government has resources to promote the city in English, official sources of information are little more than poorly translated business investment brochures. Foriegn residents operate the most poplular and useful web sites, and the goal for this wiki is to unite all the information in one source. The wiki would contain historical information, as well as current events and city guide information - making it a resource for visitor and residents.
There is a growing expat community in Dalian, with numerous blogs and city guides springing up. While this wiki will not replace all the sources, there is a desire to have a centralized information clearing house for the local residents, and as a way to share their love and knowledge of the city and its history with the world. Plus, a wiki would ensure an unbias reference, without political or business (advertising) influences. The resident foreign expert of Dalian would administrate this wiki, with contributions from the expat community. While these interests do have commercial ties to Dalian, the wiki (by the nature of its public access to edit) would remain an open colaborative venue.
